ZPT Zinc Pyrithione CAS 13463-41-7
Zinc Pyrithione: Overview
Zinc pyrithione is a compound formed by the complexation of zinc ions and pyrithione, with the molecular formula C₁₀H₈N₂O₂S₂Zn. Its core characteristic is its role as a highly effective broad-spectrum antifungal and antibacterial agent. Due to its unique chemical structure, it can effectively inhibit microbial growth. It is widely used as an additive in personal care products.

Zinc Pyrithione: Main Functions
Its core mechanism of action is dual:
Inhibiting microbial growth: It can effectively penetrate and destroy the cell membranes of fungi (especially Malassezia, which is associated with dandruff) and bacteria, interfering with their energy metabolism and thus preventing their reproduction.
Regulating skin cell renewal: In addition to its direct antibacterial effect, it can also regulate the excessive proliferation and abnormal keratinization of scalp keratinocytes, reducing the accumulation of keratinous debris that leads to dandruff at its source.
Applications of Zinc Pyrithione: From Daily Chemicals to Industry
Based on its powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties, its applications are mainly concentrated in two areas:
Personal Care Products (formerly a primary area):
For a long time, it has been a highly effective dandruff agent, the core active ingredient in most anti-dandruff shampoos and conditioners, used to control dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.
Industrial Applications:
As a preservative and antifouling agent, it is widely used in coatings, plastics, sealants, marine antifouling paints, and industrial cooling water systems to prevent the adhesion and damage of microorganisms, algae, and marine organisms.
Recommendations
·Usage Concentration
In dandruff rinse-out products, the maximum permissible concentration is 1.5%; in leave-on products, it is 0.1%. In actual use, it is recommended to start with a lower concentration (e.g., 0.5%-1%) and adjust according to scalp tolerance and effectiveness.
If used as a preservative, the maximum concentration in rinse-out products is 0.5%.
·Frequency of Use
Long-term continuous use is not recommended. It is suggested to use 2-3 times per week to avoid excessively suppressing the scalp's microbiome balance. If scalp problems are severe, the frequency of use can be increased briefly (2-4 weeks), then gradually reduced thereafter.
·How to Use
When shampooing, apply the shampoo containing zinc pyrithione evenly to wet hair and scalp, gently massage for 2-3 minutes to ensure the ingredients fully contact the scalp, then rinse thoroughly with water.
If using conditioner, avoid contact with the scalp to prevent rinsing away the anti-dandruff ingredients.
