Antioxidant Activity

Components found in Sanguisorba extract—such as flavonoids—possess potent antioxidant properties. It acts by scavenging free radicals, thereby reducing oxidative damage to the skin and delaying the skin aging process.

Studies indicate that the continuous administration of Sanguisorba extract (containing approximately 46.3% tannins) for 40 days can reverse the age-related trends of declining glutathione and rising glutathione disulfide levels in the kidneys and livers of SAM mice. Simultaneously, it reduces malondialdehyde levels in the serum, kidneys, and livers to near-normal levels. This demonstrates that S. officinalis extract stimulates the antioxidant defense mechanisms in SAM mice, thereby exerting beneficial effects in ameliorating oxidative stress and oxidative damage.

Antibacterial Activity

Regarding antibacterial properties, studies have investigated the mechanisms by which the tannin components of Sanguisorba extract inhibit Staphylococcus aureus. The results indicate that Sanguisorba tannin extract exerts a strong inhibitory effect against Gram-positive bacteria. These tannins disrupt the cell wall and cell membrane structures of S. aureus, thereby altering the organism's normal osmotic regulation. This disruption leads to the leakage of alkaline phosphatase (AKP), small-molecule ions, and macromolecules from within the bacterial cell. Concurrently, it alters cellular morphology, impairs the normal growth of S. aureus, and ultimately induces cell death. Currently, Sanguisorba tannins are being explored as potential antibacterial agents; however, further research is required to fully assess their potential adverse effects and safety profile.
