    What is  Lithospermum Extract Alkannin?

Shikonin is a naturally occurring bioactive compound primarily sourced from the dried roots of Lithospermum erythrorhizon and the herbaceous plant Viola yedoensis.

It is practically insoluble in water, yet readily dissolves in ethanol, conventional organic solvents and vegetable oils. Notably, shikonin dissolves easily in alkaline aqueous solutions and will precipitate out once exposed to acidic conditions.

    What are the benefits?

    1. Anti-inflammatory Effect

Shikonin exerts potent anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting key inflammatory signaling pathways. It effectively relieves tissue redness, swelling and pain, and alleviates acute and chronic inflammatory responses.

    2. Antibacterial Activity

Shikonin possesses broad-spectrum antibacterial properties. It interferes with the growth and reproduction of various pathogenic microorganisms, helping inhibit bacterial proliferation and prevent bacterial infections.

    3. Wound Healing Promotion

It can stimulate the migration of fibroblasts and boost collagen synthesis in the skin, remarkably accelerating tissue regeneration and speeding up the overall wound repair and healing process.

    4. Antioxidant Property

As a natural high-efficiency antioxidant, shikonin scavenges excess free radicals in the body, relieves oxidative stress, and protects cells and tissues from oxidative damage.

    Application Areas Overview

    Cosmetics Industry

Shikonin is a high-value functional raw material widely applied in the beauty and skincare industry. It delivers outstanding effects in antioxidation, anti-wrinkle and anti-inflammation, and is commonly formulated into a variety of skincare products, including facial masks, sunscreens, body lotions and other daily cosmetics.

    Food Industry

In the food sector, Shikonin serves as an excellent natural pigment and functional ingredient. It is extensively used in desserts, jams, beverages and pastries, imparting a natural purple hue to food products. It not only enhances visual appeal but also adds nutritional and functional value to finished foods.

    Agricultural Production

Shikonin exhibits excellent stress-resistant activity and helps plants adapt to harsh growing environments. It effectively reduces crop losses caused by drought, salinity and low-temperature stress, while promoting healthy plant growth and development.

Additionally, Shikonin improves plants’ soil adaptability and drought tolerance, supporting steady physiological growth and ultimately boosting crop yield and quality.
