    What is IPMP?

IPMP, or o-Cymen-5-OL (Isopropyl Methylphenol), is an antifungal preservative used in cosmetics and personal care products to prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms, thus extending the shelf life of the product. It belongs to the isopropyl cresol family and was originally synthesized as a crystalline compound. Research indicates that o-Cymen-5-OL is also used as a cosmetic disinfectant, a skin-cleansing agent, and to prevent odor by inhibiting microbial growth.

    Characteristics of IPMP

    1) o-Cymen-5-OL has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity; even small amounts effectively inhibit and kill bacteria, yeasts, and fungi.

    2) It has strong anti-inflammatory properties, inhibits Propionibacterium acnes growth, and has anti-irritant and anti-sebum effects.

    3) It prevents acne, reduces blackheads, and improves skin radiance.

    4) It softens the stratum corneum and promotes cell turnover and exfoliation.

    5) It absorbs certain wavelengths of UV light and has antioxidant properties.

    6) It is low-irritating and non-allergenic to the skin.

Main Functions and Applications of IPMP

IPMP is a mild, broad-spectrum, effective antimicrobial agent suitable for contact with mucous membranes. It is commonly used in disinfectants, hand sanitizers, oral care products, anti-microbial and anti-mite products, and functional toothpaste.  It is also widely used as a preservative in creams, lotions, lipsticks, and hair care products, as well as in pharmaceutical products for antimicrobial, acne-fighting, and anti-mite applications. The maximum allowable concentration in cosmetics is 0.1%.

    Preservation and Disinfection

As an antifungal preservative, it is widely used in cosmetics, skincare products, and oral care products to inhibit microbial growth and extend product shelf life.

    Antibacterial and Anti-inflammatory

It has a significant inhibitory effect on pathogenic bacteria such as Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus, and is commonly used in acne and dandruff treatment products.

    Oral Care

It can penetrate dental plaque biofilm, effectively killing oral pathogens and maintaining oral microbiome balance.

    Other Applications

It can also be used in household cleaning products, pet care products, and for antimicrobial and odor-control applications in textiles. Industrial applications include disinfection of air conditioning systems and rooms, or treating textiles to impart antibacterial, deodorizing, and antifungal properties.
