What is reduced coenzyme Q10?
Naringenin is a naturally occurring dihydroflavonoid compound. As the aglycone of naringin, it appears as white needle-shaped crystals at room temperature (in methanol). Its solubility is characterized by being readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and benzene, as well as polar solvents such as dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide, but being virtually insoluble in water. Its characteristic color reactions include a cherry-red color with magnesium hydrochloride powder, a reddish-purple color with sodium tetrahydroborate, and a negative Molish reaction.
Natural Sources and Structural Characteristics
This compound is primarily found in plants of the Rutaceae family (such as grapefruit and citrus fruits), the Rosaceae family (cherry blossom buds), and the Anacardiaceae family (cashew fruit shells). As a representative flavonoid, its core structure shares common characteristics, but it is generally limited by poor lipid and water solubility and low bioavailability. Structural modifications (such as alkylation, acylation, sulfonation, glycosidation, and metal complex formation) can significantly improve its solubility and, consequently, its bioavailability.

What Are The Benefits?
Antibacterial Effects
Naringenin exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, showing significant inhibitory effects against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, as well as Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli. Recent studies have also demonstrated antibacterial effects against various oral pathogens (such as Porphyromonas gingivalis) and fungi (such as Candida albicans), with a particularly strong inhibitory effect against Helicobacter pylori.
Antiviral Properties
Research has shown that naringenin can reduce viral production in HCV-infected hepatocytes, possibly by inhibiting very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) secretion. Furthermore, it has shown potential antiviral activity against poliovirus, HSV-1, and HSV-2, and clinical studies are currently underway.
Anti-inflammatory Effects
Although controversial, several studies have demonstrated that naringenin exerts antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators. Its anti-inflammatory mechanisms are still under investigation.
Antioxidant Properties
Naringenin exhibits significant antioxidant capacity, demonstrated in both in vitro and animal studies to effectively scavenge free radicals and reduce DNA oxidative damage, thereby improving skin condition and overall health.
Cardiovascular Protection
By lowering plasma total cholesterol levels and promoting metabolism, naringenin can reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and potentially protect against cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease.
Immunomodulatory Function
Naringenin can bidirectionally regulate the immune system, restoring imbalanced immune status to normal levels and thus reducing disease susceptibility. This property makes it valuable in the prevention and adjunctive treatment of immune-related diseases.
What Are The Benefits?
Food Industry
As a natural functional additive, naringenin primarily serves the dual functions of sweetening and preservative in the food industry. It can significantly enhance the taste of sweeteners, reduce the amount of sucrose used, effectively improve food flavor, and eliminate unpleasant aftertastes. Furthermore, its natural antibacterial properties make it a safe and effective food preservative.
Health Products
In health products, naringenin exhibits multiple physiological regulatory functions: it maintains health through potent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects; it significantly regulates lipid metabolism, lowering blood cholesterol and liver sterol levels; and it also exhibits comprehensive health benefits, including immune regulation, lipid metabolism, and estrogen-like effects.
Cosmetics
As a cosmetic active ingredient, naringenin has three core benefits: inhibiting pathogenic microorganisms such as Propionibacterium acnes; it effectively scavenges free radicals and exerts antioxidant protection; and when used synergistically with vitamin A, it can significantly improve skin aging, dryness, wrinkles, and other photoaging issues, achieving a comprehensive skincare effect for whitening and spot reduction.
