Factory Natural Senna Leaf Extract powder
What is Senna Leaf Extract?
Senna leaf extract is an active ingredient extracted from the leaflets of the leguminous plants Senna angustifolia and Senna acuminata. Its main components are dianthrone glycosides (such as sennosides A, B, and C) and anthraquinone compounds. Its cathartic effect stems from the metabolism of sennosides by colonic microorganisms into rhein anthrone, which stimulates intestinal contractions and inhibits water absorption. This extract is used in pharmaceuticals and health supplements for short-term constipation relief, but dosage must be strictly controlled. Modern research has also shown that it regulates colonic protein expression.
The use of senna leaf as a laxative dates back to folk traditions in North Africa and West Asia. Since the 20th century, studies have confirmed that its composition contains approximately 3% dianthrone glycosides and mucilage. Standardized extracts contain 8%-30% sennosides. The production process uses low-temperature water-ethanol extraction to minimize the loss of heat-sensitive components. Advances in industrial technology in the 21st century have led to a wide range of dosage forms, including water-soluble powders and concentrated extracts of varying ratios. HPLC/TLC testing is used to ensure quality. Modern applications have expanded to preoperative bowel cleansing and adjunctive treatment of bacillary dysentery.
What are the benefits?
Heat-clearing and Damp-removing Effects
Senna leaves, with their bitter and cold nature, have dual regulatory effects:
· Effectively dissolve internal stagnation
· Clear damp-heat pathogenic qi
Particularly suitable for treating abdominal distension and pain caused by gastrointestinal heat and indigestion
Promoting bowel movements
Senna leaves, belonging to the large intestine meridian, exhibit the following therapeutic effects:
· Promote digestion, strengthen the spleen and stomach
· Significantly improve constipation
· Promote diuresis and swelling, dissolve stagnant water and dampness
Effectively effective for symptoms such as food stagnation and edema
Metabolism-regulating effects
Assists weight loss through the following mechanisms:
· Enhancing gastrointestinal motility
· Reducing food retention time in the digestive tract
· Promoting the excretion of metabolic waste
Local hemostatic effects
· Clinical studies have shown that endoscopic spraying of senna leaf aqueous extract
· acts directly on the site of gastric bleeding
· producing a significant hemostatic effect
Antibacterial activity
· Experiments have confirmed that both the aqueous and alcoholic extracts
· exhibit antibacterial properties and have inhibitory effects on a variety of pathogens
Applications and prospects
Senna extract is widely used in health supplements due to its significant laxative effect.
Senna extract is also used in weight loss products. Due to its ability to promote bowel movements, some slimming teas and weight loss products add senna extract to help consumers lose weight.
